Overview

Boredom, discontent, and the inability to see what's being offered: the Four of Cups shows someone so wrapped up in dissatisfaction that they miss the opportunity right in front of them. It's a wake-up call to check your own blind spots.

Symbolism

A young man sits beneath a tree, arms crossed, contemplating three cups on the ground before him. A fourth cup is being offered by a mysterious hand emerging from a cloud, but he doesn't seem to notice it. His expression suggests weariness and disinterest rather than active unhappiness. The tree provides shade, comfort, and also isolation from the wider world.

Upright Meaning

In love, the Four of Cups suggests emotional stagnation. You or your partner may be taking the relationship for granted, or you're so focused on what's wrong that you can't appreciate what's right. If single, you might be turning away potential connections because none of them match an idealized fantasy. In career, dissatisfaction is the theme. The work feels flat, uninspiring, or meaningless. But before you quit, look around: there may be an opportunity you're not seeing because you're too caught up in what's missing. Spiritually, this card signals apathy. You've lost the thread of purpose or meaning, and meditation feels hollow. The remedy is often simpler than you think: gratitude for what you already have.

Reversed Meaning

Reversed, the Four of Cups signals a renewed sense of awareness. You're starting to see what you've been ignoring, and motivation returns. New opportunities suddenly become visible, and you're ready to engage with them. Sometimes the reversal indicates that you've finally processed the dissatisfaction and are ready to take action.

When You Draw This Card

Look at what you already have before deciding it isn't enough. The opportunity you're seeking may already be in front of you.

Grounded in A.E. Waite's Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911, public domain), with modern interpretation.
