Overview

Authority wielded through intellect rather than force. The King of Swords sits in judgment with a clear mind and an unsheathed blade, representing the highest expression of rational thought, ethical decision-making, and the power of a well-argued truth.

Symbolism

A king sits on a throne carved with butterflies and sylphs, holding a large upright sword in his right hand that tilts slightly to the right. His expression is stern and focused. He wears a blue robe under a purple cloak, connecting intellect with authority. Trees in the background are still, and the sky is clear, suggesting mental clarity and a settled judgment. Unlike the Knight who charges, this King has no need to move. His authority is established and his decisions are final.

Upright Meaning

In love, the King of Swords brings rational clarity to emotional situations. He favors honest communication, fair negotiation, and decisions made with the head as well as the heart. He may represent a partner who is more intellectual than emotional, or the need to approach a relationship issue with logic. In career, this card represents the highest form of professional authority: leadership through expertise, ethical standards, and clear thinking. Legal professions, executive roles, consulting, and any position that requires decisive judgment all thrive here. Spiritually, the King of Swords embodies intellectual integrity in spiritual matters. He doesn't accept easy answers, and his spiritual practice is grounded in reason as well as intuition.

Reversed Meaning

Reversed, the King of Swords can become a dictator who uses intellect to control and manipulate. Power corrupts his judgment, and his decisions serve ego rather than truth. Cruelty disguised as logic, verbal abuse, and the misuse of authority are all risks. He may also represent a failure to make decisions when action is needed, paralyzed by his own overthinking.

When You Draw This Card

Think clearly, decide fairly, and lead with integrity. The sword of intellect is most powerful when it serves justice rather than ego.

Grounded in A.E. Waite's Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911, public domain), with modern interpretation.
